This year I (Devon) was asked to be the local lead of the Soldonta/Kenai area for StartUp week. November 16th-22nd Alaska hosts StartUp week. What is that you ask? Its a week to support and encourage new local entrepreneurs and to celebrate those who have already been established. A handful of local businesses and entrepreneurs put together events to help others who might have a business idea but are unsure what the next steps to make their dream a reality. We put together a "road map to success." The idea was for people to participate in these events and at the end of the week be ready to make your pitch for your business idea. The Soldotna Chamber put together the finale event, which was a spin off of the famous Shark Tank show. The Chamber offered a $4000 scholarship to the winner. You had to submit your business idea/plan, there were 9 people who submitted. They then picked out 5 finalist to present their pitch to the "sharks" and audience. On November 22nd Kenai Kombucha won the scholarship and the peoples choice award. We were shocked, mostly because our public speaking need LOTS of work. I knew what I wanted to say and what my presentation was going to look like but I froze up because I was so nervous. However, we WON and are forever grateful for all of the support to our new business. We plan to use this scholarship to purchase more equipment so we can produce more kombucha to the community.
Thank you again to all of our customers and family members.
I look forward to next years StartUP week and being apart of it. I hope to grow the Kenai Peninsula with more awesome small businesses especially the Kenai area.
The Soldotna Chamber hopes to increase this scholarship amount and continue to do this for the next years to come. I cant wait to see what happens and everyones awesome ideas next year.
